Epic Mickey was my introduction to Oswald. I've since seen all of the released original shorts several times. Really wish they'd re-released the collection tin!
Seeing as I'm currently 41 (born in 1977) and grew up on Mickey Mouse cartoons and such as a kid, so yes, I had seen and heard of Oswald and been "Big" Pete as a kid. I don't recall hearing about "little" Pete. Though "Big" Pete was always kidnapping Minnie Mouse from Mickey and Mickey had to save her.
My parents educated me on all those things. Oswald was more from the black and white cartoon versions of Mickey Mouse. You don't really see much of him nowadays which is sad because I remember watching some of the silent cartoons when I was a kid with my parents of him. And yeah, it was funny.
"In 1928, Charles Mintz took the rights of Oswald from Walt Disney and claimed Oswald as an official Universal Studios character. In November 1928, as a replacement to compete with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Ub Iwerks created Mickey Mouse for the Walt Disney Studio."
That was taken from Wikipedia
Hope that answers some of your questions.
well, the first time I saw him, it was in a trailer for Epic Mickey, but I thought he was just a common enemy in the game.
but a while later, I read an old comic that celebrated Walt Disney's 50th birthday, and Oswald was mentioned there, in addition to a picture of him mounted on a horse similar to Horace, and that's how I met him.
and before that, I saw him in a Christmas cartoon by Walter Lantz, but since the characters in this cartoon were parodies of celebrities, I thought he was a parody of Mickey.
Oswald was replaced by Mickey
I found him on the disney website back when they still had a list of random characters (changed out every month or week) And learned about Epic Mickey soon after. He quickly became my favorite.
