Scrapped

Notice: This article or section contains information about content that was planned or conceptualized for the Epic Mickey series, but was ultimately scrapped. Information about scrapped content should not be considered canon.

A third Epic Mickey game was initially planned but was cancelled following a change of direction at Disney Interactive Studios, leading to the closure of Junction Point Studios.

Teaser

A post-credits scene in Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two shows all the Petes (with Petetronic only appearing in the Thinner route) in front of Ventureland's projector with a fearful Gremlin Prescott trapped in Big Bad Pete's hand. He then says: "Look at them all, so happy. They ain't even going to know what hit'em!". Before all of them jumps into the projector, hinting at the possibility of the Petes being the main antagonists of Epic Mickey 3.

Unused voicelines in Autotopia revealed that the Petes would've started a radio broadcast titled "KPETE", suggesting that this would've also played a part in Epic Mickey 3.[1]

If certain areas in the Mad Doctor's Attic are thinned out, costumes can be found which Gus and Oswald comments aren't suited for the Mad Doctor. These are, in fact, costumes that belong to Pete in his various appearances in Mickey and Oswald cartoons. This hints at the Petes either spying on the Mad Doctor's scheme or using the attic as an hideout. Interestingly, while Pete Pan and Big Bad Pete (and Petetronic regardless of which ending you chose to take) disappear from the areas they were in over the course of the game, Small Pete remains in Rainbow Caverns despite jumping into the Ventureland projector in the post-credits scene.

Background

When asked about the possibility of an Epic Mickey trilogy, Warren Spector stated, "I don't do anything that isn't extensible. And I will certainly feel that I have not done my job if we can't make other games in this world with these characters. In my head, I've got two more planned." In Issue 277 of Nintendo Power, he also stated his plans for the trilogy in an interview. The first game was been the reintroduction of Oswald, the second was Oswald's promotion to being a playable character, and the third he left unsaid, but stated that it would have been a logical progression.

Warren Spector also clarified that just because someone plans a trilogy, doesn't mean it will happen in reality. Spector has also confirmed that he had an "idea" for the story of Epic Mickey 3. Spector has stated that the musical bits of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two were a "test bed". Depending on the reception for the next game, he would have ramped up the musical song implementation, with Epic Mickey 3 possibly being a full-blown musical. Depending on the timing, the next game could have seen a potential release on the next-gen platforms (such as the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One).

On January 29th 2013, it was announced that Junction Point Studios was being closed by Disney. Disney, however, does still own the rights to the IP for Epic Mickey, but no plans have been announced to continue the series, meaning the chances of another entry are slim. As is the case with many canceled games, petitions have been made by fans, though none have persuaded Disney to select a new developer.

On 30th April 2015, Warren Spector responded to questions regarding the game. He stated that he "really wanted to up the multiplayer action and make a truly interactive musical game and make music in the context of a game that no music-game has done yet." [2] Spector also stated that the third game would have left Wasteland.[3]

Trivia

  • A MMO game called Epic History, was meant to tie-in the events of Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two with Epic Mickey 3. The game started development in 2010 and was cancelled late 2012.
  • When asked on LinkedIn about Epic Mickey 3 following the announcement of Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, Warren Spector replied, "I’d love to do Epic Mickey 3 but I have a day job that would make that impossible. I actually have a high level idea for what I’d do in a tri-quel."[4]
